Updated: Jan 23

Make an easy homemade Honey Lemon Ginger Cough Syrup for you and your kids!

Today, I’m going to show you an easy cough syrup in my homemade cough syrup series. You can definitely check out other cough syrup recipes in my youtube channel or my blog. This is also kid-friendly cough syrup and can hopefully help relieve some symptoms especially since we are dealing with a huge surge of coughs and colds lately and it's SUPER easy to make.

All you need is:

1 lemon

1 thumb size amount of ginger

1 ½ cups of your favorite raw (unfiltered) honey.

You also need a sterilized jar of your choice.

Honey is a natural cough suppressant and reduce airway inflammation in your lungs. in one study it showed that giving children 1-2 tsp of honey right before bedtime really helped soothe their evening coughs (use this as a reel) In another study honey appeared to be as effective as the common cough suppressant ingredient found in over the counter medicine Dextromethorphran .

*** Never give honey to a child under the age of 1 because of a serious form of food poisoning known as infant botulism. Little babies don’t have the right bacteria in their intestines yet to handle honey until around age 1. ****

Why do we add lemon to this syrup? Lemon tends to cut mucus so if the cough is causing post nasal drip or tonsillitis, the lemon might alleviate that a bit. Lemon is also rich in vitamin C and has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Ginger in Chinese medicine is known to warm the body. We use ginger in our formulas to help treat fatigue, lack of energy, help digestion and it is also used to help inflammation and soothe sore throat.
ginger for coughs

It's a spicy pungent herb that help boost immunity to help fight infections that cause sore throats. So I highly suggest adding this to your honey lemon cough syrup but it can be an ingredient that you don't need to add if you don't have it available.

First thing you want to do is wash your lemon

**(I like to get organic lemon for this as we are using the skin in this syrup as well)

Cut lemons in ¼ inch slices and place them in the bottom of the jar.

For the ginger you can keep the skin on and cut about a ½ thumb size amount into slices and put that on top of the lemon.

Now add about —1 ½ cup of raw honey to the mix . make sure the lemon and honey are completely submerged into the jar and let it sit for 12 hours in your fridge before using it

After 12 hours the mixture should look a bit runny and it's ready to use! Just remember to keep it in the fridge and keep the lemon and ginger submerged into the liquid as much as possible.

This jar should last about 2-3 months in the fridge

If you are sick take at least 1-2 tsp every 2 hours

For maintenance you can take 1-2 tsp a day.

Extra ways to use this mixture:

You can scoop 1 tbsp and place it in a mug of hot water for some warm honey lemon ginger tea, or even just take a spoon full in your mouth for some instantaneous relief.

I hope this gives you some relief from your cough. HAPPY HEALING! ^_^
