Healing your Lungs Naturally

As the Canadian wildfire smog moved toward the United States, a lot more people have been noticing that their lung health had declined. So what are some ways to improve your lung health and help you feel better whether it's from pollution, smoking, chronic Covid symptoms, weak lungs, asthma, allergies, and more?

lung health

The lungs according to Chinese medicine, is the storehouse of fluids for the WHOLE body. The Lung function is to receive and let go. When your lung health is weak we also say that your defensive and protective Qi is also weak and most likely you will get sick more often and easily. So how do we protect our lung health when so many factors can be in play, especially environmental ones?

1. DRINK LOTS OF WATER

The number one way to help heal your lungs is actually drinking more water. Water flushes toxins through the bloodstream removing particles that have been inhaled through the lungs. It also helps the mucosal lining of the lungs stay thin which makes the lungs function even better.

2. USE SALINE NOSE SPRAY

Toxic inhalation, pollution, and allergens all affect the sinuses and can cause irritation, inflammation, and also thickening of the sinus cavities. The best way to clear out the passages is to moisten and soothe the inside of the nose. Saline helps loosen debris and clears congestion and blockages so that you can breathe better.

3. STEAM WITH THYME

THYME is a household herb that is so effective for improving LUNG health. It helps spasmodic coughs from asthma and also clears congestion in the lungs. You can make a natural cough syrup with thyme and honey ( blog post coming soon) or you can make a steam bath and inhale thyme for a few minutes to clear out the lungs.

HOW TO MAKE THYME STEAM BOWL:

  1. Get 1-2 TBSP of Thyme (or use fresh thyme) in a large bowl.

  2. Pour boiling water.

  3. Lower your head so it's inches from the hot water.

  4. Cover the head with a towel to trap steam.

  5. Breathe deeply for 1-2 minutes and repeat as needed.

4. TAKE EXTRA VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that boosts the immune function of the body. Studies show that when you increase vitamin C it can reduce the duration of colds and upper respiratory infections. It also helps reduce the risk of infection for those who have COPD. If you do smoke, the additional aid of vitamin C can actually help improve lung function.
